SPLASH into JUNE 2011

I was approached by GAP, to run a month long bootcamp for their entire company. With the way corporate climates are these days I’m so impressed that GAP was willing to invest in their employees with something so positive.

I want to applaud this company for believing in the people that work for them and understanding that fitness is a way to bring a company together. The BOOTCamp filled in record time and let it be known that when a group of people workout together it can create a bond that lasts long after the boardroom.

Thank you GAP! I look forward to kicking you’re A** all month and making your TEAM even more unstoppable… Corporate AMERICA Unit!

* MOTIVATION – Don’t let FEAR Rule you… RULE FEAR.

Taking the Leap. Should I… Shouldn’t I… EhhhHHhhH, meh? Do you have something in your life that you really want to make happen? I feel like most people do, especially if you’re a New Yorker.

What’s stopping you? Is it fear? What’s really scaring you…? These are the hard-core questions one must ask when they want to take anything in their lives to the next level. Your body, your job, your relationships…

Often times the things we Fear are not real at all… They are stories we make up in our head about our goals or our dreams to help use stay safe and cozy where we are. Because often times it’s better the devil we know than the devil we don’t know…

Taking it to the next level hurts, it’s scary and you might fail… BUT ask yourself what would your life feel like if you didn’t go after that dream 10 years from now? Would you have regrets?

Ego gets in the way, Money gets in the way, and Life gets in the way… These are all often side effects of fear. If you want something bad enough in this life you must believe in the magic of Your dreams. I believe that there’s something inside all of us that’s greater than any obstacle.

Take the Leap… I bet you’ll soar.

* QUOTE-Tastic

Who watched Oprah’s Last Show? I did… Geezzz, that woman helped raise a generation. I remember when I was in High School I watched an episode when she told her audience how crucial it was to follow your passion. I believe it was one of the first episodes that she began talk about of passion and “aha” moments. What she said resonated with me.

Oprah said – “Just follow your passion. People told me I couldn’t have this show because I was a big black woman. Don’t worry about what people think. People think lots of things and those “People” aren’t you. You were put on this planet for a reason. Find that thing you must do. That thing that makes your heart sing. Don’t worry about the money. The money will come… Just follow your passion.”

I remember thinking “Yeeahhh OPRAH! Now, what’s my passion…???” Even though my parents wanted me to be a lawyer among many other things a Fitness Professional NOT included… 🙂 That show helped give me the confidence to believe that I could possibly make Fitness a Career?! Thank you Oprah, you definitely had a HUGELY positive impact on my life.

Here’s my favorite quote from her final show… “Be responsible for the energy you bring to this place.” – Oprah Winfrey

Have a GREAT Month!

    Hi Lacey & Jessica,

Over the past months I have been reading your blog and in stead of being an anonymous passer-by I wanted to leave this message and say thank you! Your intelligent and entertaining views on fitness and life are an inspiration to me as a woman, as an out & proud lesbian and as an aspiring athlete.

A litte bit about me. Before my 20s (I am 32 now) I was everything but an athlete. I had asthma as a child and that somehow led my parents to believe sports weren’t right for me (in hindsight, I couldn’t disagree more – parents should not put their children in boxes before they learned to discover their own potential).

The positive side to that was that I devoted every minute before and after school, college and later my rather demanding job to music. I have been playing the piano all my life, taught myself acoustic and electric guitar and bass, started a band and learned to sing, played drums in another band, started composing and am now mastering the cello.

I started working out for the first time in my life at the age 21. I don’t even know exactly what made me do it, I guess some of those neuropathways Jessica wrote about just connected. Thankfully, I have always had a rather healthy lifestyle – besides the obvious lack of exercise, so my starting position wasn’t too bad.

Two things inspired me: my work field and my experience as a musician.

I work as a managing consultant in IT and finance at a leading psychiatric hospital specialized in the treatment of victims of war, torture and violence who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. We treat mostly veterans and refugees – brave people. As you may know, there is no cure for PTSD. Treatments are aimed at providing coping strategies, strengthening support systems and changing behavior. There are many ways and treatments, but I became fascinated by the success of running therapy, and subsequently read a lot about how physical exercise affects your state of mind, and vice versa.

As to the second inspiration I found in music – and this may sound silly: I would view my body as my instrument and my mind as both musician and composer. To be able to play an instrument – and I mean to genuinely play, not produce notes – you need to put your heart, mind and body into it. You do that every single time you play a musical piece and not just when you are performing. You also continiously need to challenge your technique, because as you get better those musical pieces that you love come within reach of playing them yourself. It takes passion, persistence and – you guessed it – a whole lot of patience.

I tried to bring that attitude to my fitness routine, and it worked miraculously, and when I stumbled on your website (I saw Lacey on MTV’s Made) it was instant recognition. I completely share your insights on pushing it every time, and stepping out of your comfort zone to get the best results.

Right now I am rearranging my fitness routine based on the insights you gave me. I added more interval training, added running (ouch!), evaluated my weight training with an instructor, and balanced my carb/fat/proteine intake some more.

I thank you again, and I am looking forward to reading your book. I wish the absolute best for you both.

PS: Lacey, I totally agree with you on the positive music during work-out, but as with food, I like my music analog, raw and pure. So here’s a small selection from my R*O*C*K workout playlist!

Foo Fighters – All my life
Lenny Kravitz – Are you gonna go my way?
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give it away
The Hives – Tick Tick Boom
The Cure – Friday I’m in love ❤
Arctic Monkeys – I bet that you look good on the dance floor
    Pearl Jam – The fixer
The Romantics – What I like about you
Jimi Hendrix Experience – Cross town traffic
Guns 'n' Roses – Welcome to the jungle 😉
